MANILA — Inamin ni Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. na may ilang retiradong opisyal ng militar ang nanawagan sa AFP na bawiin ang suporta nito kay Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr., kasunod ng malawakang protesta laban sa korapsyon noong Setyembre.

Sa isang forum ng Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) noong Oktubre 3, sinabi ni Brawner na may mga pagtatangkang “recruitment” mula sa ilang retiradong heneral upang hikayatin ang mga aktibong opisyal ng militar na kumilos laban sa administrasyon. “There were several calls for us to intervene, and in fact there was some recruitment so to speak, sad to say some of them retired officers,” ani Brawner.

Ayon sa heneral, ang mga panawagan ay naganap sa gitna ng mga protesta noong Setyembre 21 na tumutuligsa sa umano’y anomalya sa flood control projects. “There were posters and speeches calling for the Armed Forces of the Philippines to be the lead. Some of them were saying that maybe we should withdraw our support for the president,” dagdag niya.

Ibinunyag ni Brawner na nakipagpulong pa siya sa isang grupo ng retiradong opisyal na pinamumunuan ni dating heneral Romeo Poquiz, isang vocal na kritiko ni Marcos. “They were trying to reach out to the younger officers, trying to reach out to our commanders, reaching out to me even, and convincing us to intervene,” aniya.

Kabilang sa mga suhestiyon ng grupo ang “coup d’état, a military junta, in order to come up with a reset of the entire Philippine society, or withdrawal of support — so several forms of military intervention,” ayon kay Brawner. Gayunman, iginiit ng AFP chief na nanatiling buo ang suporta ng militar sa konstitusyon. “We were very clear in our mandate,” aniya.

Sinabi rin ni Brawner na ipinaalam niya ang mga pangyayari kay Pangulong Marcos. “We mentioned this to the President, him being our commander-in-chief. And he just said that, ‘I trust the AFP, I trust you to do the right thing.’ And so he wasn't really that worried,” pahayag ng heneral.

Samantala, mariing itinanggi ng Department of National Defense (DND) ang mga tsismis ukol sa kudeta. “Walang nagbalak sa AFP. Maraming nagdadasal na may nagbalak sana. Pero walang nagbabalak sa AFP,” ayon kay Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.

Nanindigan si Brawner na hindi mangyayari ang kudeta sa ilalim ng kanyang pamumuno. “As long as I serve as Chief of Staff, no coup shall happen. Not on my watch,” giit niya.
