MANILA — Kabilang sa mga tinitingnang anggulo ng Philippine National Police (PNP) sa imbestigasyon sa pagkamatay ni dating Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Undersecretary Maria Catalina “Cathy” Cabral ang kontrobersyal na flood control projects na iniimbestigahan ng Kongreso at Ombudsman.

Sa pahayag ng PNP nitong Biyernes, sinabi ng ahensya na “the allegations of Cabral’s involvement in the flood control issue will also be among the angles that police investigators would focus on.” 

Dagdag pa ni PNP Acting Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., “I have already ordered a thorough investigation into this incident for us to have a clear picture of what happened. While there was already an initial impression regarding what happened, we should not rule out any factor until our forensic investigators are able to establish the cause of death and the circumstances surrounding it.”

Si Cabral ay natagpuang wala nang buhay sa Bued River sa Tuba, Benguet matapos umano’y mahulog ang kanyang sasakyan sa bangin noong Huwebes ng gabi. Idineklara siyang patay sa ospital madaling araw ng Biyernes.

Matatandaang nagbitiw si Cabral sa DPWH noong Setyembre sa gitna ng imbestigasyon ng Kongreso kaugnay sa mga umano’y anomalya sa flood control projects at alegasyon ng kickbacks mula sa ilang mambabatas.

Patuloy ang joint probe ng PNP, Cordillera police, at National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) upang matukoy ang eksaktong dahilan ng insidente. Kasama sa imbestigasyon ang forensic examination at medico-legal autopsy upang malinawan ang mga pangyayari bago ang pagkamatay ng dating opisyal.
